The Empty Self

As I walked to lunch today a young man drove past me in his Ferrari. He was talking on the phone, and looked extremely unhappy. Lack of fulfilment is not usually obvious in those who seem to have achieved so much financial success. To poor onlookers it seems as if the guy driving the Ferrari has everything, he can buy anything he wants, including love.

This, however, is hardly the case. Many such people suffer from the condition of the Empty Self. These dissatisfied people resort to material wealth in an attempt to make up for something unfulfilled in their lives, compulsively buying things they don’t really need or want.
